What are the pros and cons of using glass, acrylic, metal or wood for awards?

Answered By Elena Trumbo, Editor

Usually, trophies and plaques presented in prestigious awards such as Grammys and Oscars are made of glass and acrylic. It is for the reason that it is better to craft using specialize machines. What makes it disadvantageous is that once it is not handled properly, it can be smashed into pieces. Also the costs per award using those materials are big, so its just those big award-giving bodies that are giving those kinds of award.

On the other hand, trophies and plaques made of wood and metal are still popular because it is much cheaper and the raw materials are also abundant in the environment. Many craftsmen still handcrafting such materials and its cost are far cheaper than the glass and acrylic type. Although, metals are corrosive and acquire rust, and wood are possible targets for termites and rotting.
